Chebaling Reserve has the geological structure of Huanan fold, with the terrain downgrading from the northwest to the southeast. The highest mountain Tianpingjia is with an elevation of 1256 meters and the lowest Zhangdongshui is with 330 meters. The Reserve locates in the south foot of Nanlin Mountain, and the region belongs to the subtropical monsoon area with a distinct seasonal variation of continental and marine climate. There are lots of crisscross streams in the Reserve, among which, the Hengdu River and Zhangdongshui River are the main upstream branches penetrating through the entire reserve with flowing water throughout the year.

There are 8 natural villages within Chebaling Reserve, with 203 household and a population of 1027. The ethnic groups of Yao and Han live together, and the population of Yao is 818. Local habitants used to rely heavily on mountain resources, such as logging and hunting; nowadays, the habitants of Duheng transition area of the proposed Chebaling Biosphere Reserve are mainly Hakaa people with a population of 5804. There are 3 administrative villages in the area with 42 villagers’ groups, namely, Dashui village committee, Peace village committee, Taoyuan village committee.
